About
I am a contemporary ceramic artist and that uses hand building, burnishing, and alternative firing techniques to create one of a kind pieces.
My career as an art educator was wonderful and I was passionate about teaching art, it was an absolute joy! I was very fortunate to see the delight in the faces of so many young people of all ages. For over a decade I took student groups to Europe to discover the history, art, and the cultures of each area. The experiences were invaluable!
As an artist, I have always been drawn to the use of three dimensional space. The fascinating play of positive and negative; light and shadow; and the movement created by that interaction has always been an open door for endless design opportunities.
Throughout my career I have worked with a variety of materials but clay is the grounding medium. The slow process of hand building, scraping, forming, and burnishing just work for me. They are both soothing and exhilarating at the same time.
artist statement
My earlier work was inspired by nature, focused on perfecting the design and form. But after a tragic personal loss I needed to dig more deeply, it just had to mean more.
My work is anthropic and the white earthenware I use has both strength and refinement that speaks about our human nature. Each piece is made in the same way just are we are created. The process is intuitive, very personal, and intended to reflect how human beings are defined, shaped, and affected by life'e experiences.
The surfaces of my pieces have a sheen that is created by being burnished several times. I use organic materials and pit firing to create the coloration. By adjusting the amount of organic materials and temperature I can "sort of" control the effects of the firing.
Sometimes it is perfect, other times it's not. Unwrapping each piece is always delightful!
The differences in contour and coloration speak about who they are and where they've been.
They are a celebration of the importance of the human experience and honor personal connectedness.
