About

As a contemporary ceramic artist I use hand building, burnishing, and alternative firing techniques to create one of a kind pieces.

My career as an art educator was wonderful and I was passionate about teaching art, it was an absolute joy! Witnessing the delight in the faces of so many young people as they discovered their own talents was a true gift. And for over a decade I took student groups on tours of Europe as we delved into many different countries, cultures, and art.

As an artist I have always been drawn to the use of three dimensional space and have created sculptures with wire, plaster, wood, fibers, plastic, but  clay is my medium of choice. The fascinating play of positive and negative; light and shadow; and the movement created by that interaction has always been an open door for me with endless design opportunities.

artist statement

My pieces are one of a kind and can range from traditional to free-form in shape. The process of hand building allows the freedom to create spatially whether using slabs or coils. Manipulation of the form and surface are the emphasis. So carving, inlaying crushed stone, texturing, and alternative firing are dependent on the form; what it may or may not need.

Learning to burnish clay has been a pivotal force in the creations of pieces. I find that the  depth and warmth that comes from a burnished surface is unsurpassed, it begs to be touched. It just has its own sheen and aura, difficult to describe.

The evolution of my work has its roots in nature where I find a plethora of inspiration; the possibilities are endless. But after a tragic personal loss I needed to dig more deeply, it just had to mean more. I found more meaning in creating pieces that were anthropic. They celebrated of the importance of the human experience and honor personal connectedness.

I use reduction firing, and pit fire with organic materials to create the coloration. Each process comes with its own set of surprises.
